How to Play PIQL Shot

PIQL Shot is a game played with two or four players using the PIQL Pro target system. The game can be played with one or two target systems. Players attempt to hit a pickleball using their pickleball paddles into the target holes to score points.

Objective

Be the first team to score 11 points or more.

Formats

  • Two players can play one on one. One PIQL Pro system recommended
  • Four players can play with two players on each team. We recommend two PIQL Pro systems for this format.

Equipment Needed

  • PIQL Pro target system(s): The PIQL Pro has six holes
  • one red hole worth 3 points
  • two yellow holes worth 2 points each,
  • three green holes worth 1 point each.
  • Pickleballs: The PIQL Pro comes with three red balls and three white balls which are used for the game
  • Pickleball Paddle: Players can use any paddle

Setup

Assemble the PIQL Pro target systems at an angle per the instructions included in the packaging. If using one target system, draw a line 14 feet away from the front legs. Players will take their shots from behind the line. If using two systems, place the targets so that the front legs of each system are 14 feet apart from each other (like the kitchen!).  If needed, move the target systems closer for beginners, children, seniors or anyone having difficulty hitting the targets.

Rules

  • It doesn’t matter who goes first so pick a fair way to decide who starts.
  • There are no restrictions on how players may hit the pickleball with their paddle. It may be dropped, tossed up or bounced before the paddles strikes the ball.
  • A round consists of players taking turns hitting their colored pickleballs towards the PIQL Pro target. For example Player A hits their first ball, Player B hits their first ball, Player A hits second ball, Player B hits second ball, Player A hits third ball, Player B hits third ball.
  • After each player has hit all three balls, the round is complete and players will tally the score for the round. See the Scoring section below for how to score.
  • Whichever player/team won the round will go first in the next round. If the round resulted in a tie and no score, the team who went first in the previous round will go first again.

Scoring

  • Each ball in the red hole is worth three points
  • Each ball in the yellow holes is worth two points
  • Each ball in the green holes is worth one point.
  • By default, it does not impact scoring if a ball bounces or rolls into one of the holes. This adds an element of luck to the game and generally makes it more fun. However, if more competitive play is desired, prior to the game players may agree upon treating a ball that bounces or rolls into a hole as worth zero points.
  • Points Calculation: PIQL Shot uses net scoring so points cancel each other out so that only one team scores per round. At the end of the round, each team will tally the total points for their color and compare. The team with higher point total will subtract the points of the other team resulting in their net score for the round. Say for example Team A scored 5 points and team B scored 3 points in a round, the net score to Team A for the round is 2 points (5 less 3).

  • There are no restrictions on how players may hit the pickleball with their paddle. It may be dropped, tossed up or bounced before the paddles strikes the ball.

Gameplay

  • Players will alternate taking shots until one team has successfully lands a ball in each opening. Once a ball lands in an available opening, leave it there. If a team lands two or more balls in the same opening, leave one ball in the opening and remove the additional balls for use on future turns.
  • Once a team successfully lands in each opening, the other team gets a redemption opportunity. They can shoot at each available opening until they miss. If they miss any redemption shot, the game is over and the opposing team is the winner. However, if they can successfully land a ball in the remaining available openings on consecutive turns without missing, they have tied the game and it will go to sudden death.
  • Sudden Death - the only valid target in sudden death is the red opening. Continue taking turns aiming at the red opening. The team that survived the redemption will go second. Once a team successfully lands a ball in the red opening the opposing team gets one attempt to do the same. If they miss it, the game is over. If they make it, repeat the process of aiming for the red opening until one team wins!
